Chalk pastels are a strong pigmented type of artist chalk. They generally will come in a short squared stick and also in pencil form for fine detail work. Chalk pastels are very vibrant and smooth. Dating all the way back to Renaissance period, these pigments are long lasting, similar to the pigments found in oil paints. When drawn into paper, they can be smudged and blended very simply by using your finger, a q-tip or a tissue.
Chalk pastels are great for quick art and with practice, very detailed work. To build up color, the pastels can be layered on top of one another. When you want to build up multiple layers or if you need to protect a finished drawing, use a clear aerosol spray called workable fixatif to help keep the color from smudging and ruining the artwork.
